PAT Testing
(ITEE)
Most businesses are familiar with PAT Testing. What fewer people know is that the rules have changed and the process now goes further than it used to.
The official term is now ITEE, which stands for Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. This update came with the release of the IET 5th Edition Code of Practice and it reflects a more thorough approach to electrical safety in the workplace.
What Has Changed And Why It Matters
Under the old PAT Testing guidelines, the focus was on portable appliances. Anything that did not fit that description could be overlooked. The updated ITEE framework closes that gap. Any electrical equipment that could pose a risk now falls within the scope of testing, regardless of whether it is portable or not.
This is not just a terminology update. It is a response to real incidents where equipment outside the old testing scope caused harm.
One example involved detachable USB cables at a large office. The chargers were tested routinely but the cables were not, as they fell outside the old guidelines. Many were frayed and running hot from constant use. During a planned shutdown one overheated and caused a fire. Under the current ITEE guidelines those cables would have been included from the start.
Your Legal Obligations
Employers must ensure all electrical equipment is safe under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Your insurance provider will expect ITEE testing to be included in your Health and Safety compliance records.
How Testing Works
Our engineers inspect every item visually before carrying out full electrical testing. Failed items are photographed and clearly recorded in your report. We also flag advisory issues such as worn cables or damaged sockets at no extra cost so nothing is missed.
What Happens Next
Once testing is complete we go through the report with you. If anything needs replacing or repairing we will advise on the best approach and help you keep your compliance records up to date.
