How Often Should Office Equipment Be PAT Tested?

There is no single fixed rule for how often office equipment must be PAT tested. But you are still legally required to make sure it is safe at all times.

In most offices, testing is done every one to two years. The exact timing depends on how the equipment is used and the level of risk.

What The Law Actually Requires

The law does not say “test every year”. Instead, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require you to keep electrical equipment safe.

PAT testing, now called ITEE, is how most businesses prove they are meeting this duty.

Typical Testing Frequency For Offices

For a standard office setup, a simple guide is:

  • Low risk equipment like computers and monitors: every 1 to 2 years

  • Higher use items like chargers and extension leads: yearly checks

  • Visually obvious risks: checked more often

This is about matching the level of testing to the level of risk.

Why Some Items Need More Frequent Checks

Not all equipment wears out at the same rate. Small items often need more attention because they are:

  • Used every day

  • Moved around or unplugged often

  • More likely to get damaged

Chargers and cables are a common example. They can fray or overheat but still appear to work normally. Under the newer ITEE approach, these are fully included in testing because they pose real risks.

What Happens If You Leave It Too Long

Problems do not always show clear signs. A cable can be damaged inside without looking broken. A plug can loosen over time and heat can build up slowly.

Without testing, these faults go unnoticed until something fails. In some cases, that failure can lead to a fire or injury.

Why The Name Changed From PAT Testing

You will still hear PAT testing but the correct term is now ITEE which stands for Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

The change matters because it covers more than just portable items. It includes anything that could pose a risk, such as cables and accessories that were often missed before.

This gives a more complete view of electrical safety in the workplace.

A Simple Way To Stay Compliant

You do not need to guess the right interval. A good approach is to:

  • Start with a full test

  • Review how equipment is used

  • Set a schedule based on risk

  • Adjust over time if needed

This keeps your testing practical and focused on real safety.
